Seven Killings (七杀) in BaZi
The star of pressure and boldness
Short answer
Seven Killings (Qi Sha, 七杀), also called the Indirect Officer (偏官), is the Heavenly Stem that controls your Day Master with the same yin-yang polarity. Its control is the most direct and forceful of all, so traditionally it stands for pressure, challenges and rivals, and also for boldness, decisiveness and authority. Whether it becomes strength depends on whether it is tamed: tamed, it is often the mark of someone who achieves a lot.

How to find the Seven Killings
Take the phase that controls your Day Master, then the stem of that phase with the same polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Metal controls Wood and the Yang Metal stem is Geng, so Geng is Jia's Seven Killings. The branch Shen, whose main qi is Geng, also counts as Seven Killings.

|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 庚 Geng · Yang Metal | 申 Shen |

What Seven Killings means traditionally
Seven Killings is control between stems of the same polarity, with no yin-yang buffer, so it hits harder than the Direct Officer. It stands for outside pressure, crises and opponents, and also for the nerve to take things on and act decisively. When it is tamed, the person is traditionally described as courageous and able to carry heavy loads, at their best in competitive fields or roles that need authority.
Too strong and untamed, the pressure lands directly on the Day Master: anxiety, conflict, meeting everything head-on. Hence the old saying that Seven Killings tamed is power, untamed is a demon; the same star can go either way depending on the chart.
Seven Killings in each pillar
- Year pillar
- often read as a demanding early environment, or taking on responsibility young.
- Month pillar
- Seven Killings as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem forms the Seven Killings structure (七杀格, also 偏官格). It needs an Eating God to tame it or a Seal to transform it, and is common in high-pressure fields such as the military, police, management and entrepreneurship.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. Seven Killings here is traditionally read as a strong-willed partner, with questions of control and pressure to work through in the marriage.
- Hour pillar
- later life and children; often read as bold children, or carrying heavy responsibility later in life.
Classic combinations
- Eating God controls Seven Killings (食神制杀)
- the Eating God tames Seven Killings and turns pressure into expertise, one of the most admired patterns.
- Killings and Seal support each other (杀印相生)
- Seven Killings feeds the Seal, which feeds the Day Master, so pressure becomes a drive to learn and grow, traditionally described as turning Killings into authority.
- Goat Blade harnesses Seven Killings (羊刃驾杀)
- a Goat Blade and Seven Killings in the same chart, strength meeting strength, traditionally a chart of command and authority.
- Mixed Officer and Killings (官杀混杂)
- Direct Officer and Seven Killings both show with similar strength, so direction is divided and pressure comes from several sides, unless one is combined away or restrained.
Common misconceptions
- Seven Killings is not an evil or deadly star. The name sounds frightening, but tamed, it is exactly the force behind big achievements.
- Many Seven Killings does not predict disaster; it describes a pattern of pressure and challenge.
- Seven Killings in a woman's chart does not mean unhappy relationships; it can serve as the husband star.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
