Crowning (冠带) in BaZi
The stage of coming of age
Short answer
Crowning (Guan Dai, 冠带) is the third of the Twelve Life Stages, the young person putting on cap and belt at their coming of age, ready to enter society. Traditionally it stands for confidence, ambition and care for image and face: strength heading toward maturity, though experience is still thin.

How to find the Crowning
Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so two steps forward, Chou, is Jia's Crowning; Yi's Birth is Wu, so two steps backward, Chen, is Yi's Crowning. The table shows the Crowning branch for each of the ten Day Masters.
| Day Master | Branch at Crowning |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 丑 Chou |
| 乙 Yi · Yin Wood | 辰 Chen |

What Crowning means traditionally
Crowning is the “ready to go on stage” stage: a sense of self and ambition, and a wish to be seen and recognised. A Day Master sitting on Crowning is traditionally described as confident, proactive, attentive to appearance and manners, ambitious and expressive.
Strength is rising but not at its peak, so it carries youthful traits too: caring about face, eager to prove oneself, sometimes overestimating oneself. Experience and testing make the strength steadier.
How to read it in a chart
- Day branch
- a Day Master sitting on Crowning (e.g. Bing Chen, Ren Xu, Ding Wei, Gui Chou) is traditionally read as demanding of oneself and image-conscious, wanting a partner's recognition in relationships.
- Month branch
- meeting Crowning in the month means clear seasonal support, so the Day Master leans strong.
- Year and hour pillars
- Crowning there is often read as a proactive phase, or taking on a visible role early.
- Luck pillars and years
- a Crowning period is traditionally good for seeking chances to shine and building a personal image.

- Life stage vs. self stage
- the calculator's life stage row shows the Day Master's stage at each branch; the self stage row shows each pillar's own stem on its own branch.
Common misconceptions
- Crowning does not promise rank or status; it describes confidence and drive.
- Crowning is not the strongest stage; Officialdom and Prosperity come after it and are stronger.
- The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.
