BaZi glossary · Twelve Life Stages
Death (死) in BaZi
The stage of stillness and focus
Short answer
Death (Si, 死) is the eighth of the Twelve Life Stages, the point where life's activity stops. Traditionally it does not mean actual death or disaster; it symbolises outward activity falling quiet and attention turning inward: calm, persistent and good at going deep, but not very flexible.

How to find the Death
Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so seven steps forward, Wu, is Jia's Death; Yi's Birth is Wu, so seven steps backward, Hai, is Yi's Death. The table shows the Death branch for each of the ten Day Masters.
| Day Master | Branch at Death |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 午 Wu |
| 乙 Yi · Yin Wood | 亥 Hai |
| 丙 Bing · Yang Fire | 酉 You |
| 丁 Ding · Yin Fire | 寅 Yin |
| 戊 Wu · Yang Earth | 酉 You |
| 己 Ji · Yin Earth | 寅 Yin |
| 庚 Geng · Yang Metal | 子 Zi |
| 辛 Xin · Yin Metal | 巳 Si |
| 壬 Ren · Yang Water | 卯 Mao |
| 癸 Gui · Yin Water | 申 Shen |
What Death means traditionally
Death is where strength withdraws from outward activity: no more chasing or expanding, just quiet, with energy focused on a few things. A Day Master sitting on Death is traditionally described as calm, reserved and focused, suited to research, technical work or anything needing long commitment, though sometimes stubborn and slow to adapt.
The name is only a life-cycle metaphor and cannot be used to judge lifespan or misfortune. What it signals is that outward strength is weak here, so support from Seals and Companions helps, and depth suits better than spreading out.
How to read it in a chart
- Day branch
- a Day Master sitting on Death (e.g. Jia Wu, Geng Zi, Yi Hai, Xin Si) is traditionally read as quiet and focused, devoted in relationships but not very expressive.
- Month branch
- meeting Death in the month means the birth season strongly disfavours the Day Master, which usually leans weak.
- Year and hour pillars
- Death there is often read as a quiet phase, or deep focus on one field.
- Luck pillars and years
- a Death period is traditionally a time for stillness rather than action, good for deep study, sorting things out and consolidating.
Related ideas
- Death and Tomb
- Tomb follows Death as strength moves from stopping to being stored; then come Termination, Conception and Nurture, and back to Birth.
- Death and Termination
- Death is activity stopping; Termination is ties being cut. Conception follows Termination, hence the saying about finding life at the end of the road.
Common misconceptions
- “Death” in a chart does not mean dying, a short life or disaster; it is only the metaphorical name of a life stage.
- A Day Master sitting on Death is not necessarily weak; strength is judged from the month and the whole chart.
- The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.
