Nurture (养) in BaZi
The stage of being cared for
Short answer
Nurture (Yang, 养) is the twelfth and last of the Twelve Life Stages, the unborn child nourished in the womb, about to be born. Traditionally it stands for being cared for, steady saving, gentleness and dependence: strength growing out of sight. Birth comes next, and the cycle begins again.

How to find the Nurture
Count from the Day Master: Yang stems forward from Birth, Yin stems backward. Jia's Birth is Hai, so eleven steps forward, Xu, is Jia's Nurture; Yi's Birth is Wu, so eleven steps backward, Wei, is Yi's Nurture. The table shows the Nurture branch for each of the ten Day Masters.

|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 戌 Xu |
| 乙 Yi · Yin Wood | 未 Wei |

What Nurture means traditionally
Nurture is the stage of being raised: strength cannot stand alone yet, but builds slowly in a stable setting. A Day Master sitting on Nurture is traditionally described as gentle, likeable and easily looked after, moving forward steadily, though possibly dependent on family or familiar surroundings.
Nurture sits at the end of one cycle, just before the next, so it stands for gathering strength before setting out. Meeting Nurture in a chart is often read as strength quietly building, a time for patient preparation before moving when the moment is right.
How to read it in a chart
- Day branch
- a Day Master sitting on Nurture (e.g. Jia Xu, Geng Chen, Yi Wei, Xin Chou) is traditionally read as gentle and family-minded, valuing security, happy both to care for others and to be cared for.
- Month branch
- meeting Nurture in the month means limited seasonal support, though strength is on the way back up.
- Year and hour pillars
- Nurture there is often read as being looked after by family or elders in that phase, or much involvement with raising and educating others.
- Luck pillars and years
- a Nurture period is traditionally good for rest, study and preparation, building strength for the next stage.
Related ideas
- Nurture and Birth
- Nurture is the last stop of the cycle and Birth is the next, so Nurture is often seen as “about to be born”.
- Termination, Conception, Nurture
- strength is weak in all three, but the direction is upward, from an ending toward new life.
Common misconceptions
- “Nurture” in a chart does not mean being adopted or fostered; it is the metaphorical name of a life stage.
- A Day Master sitting on Nurture is not necessarily weak; strength is judged from the month and the whole chart.
- The life stages alone cannot tell you the Day Master's strength; read them with the month, the balance of the phases and the structure.
