Hurting Officer (伤官) in BaZi
The star of brilliance and breaking rules
Short answer
The Hurting Officer (Shang Guan, 伤官) is the Heavenly Stem your Day Master produces, with the opposite yin-yang polarity. Traditionally it stands for brilliance, eloquence, innovation and the urge to break with convention, with a critical, hard-to-manage side. It attacks the Direct Officer, hence the name. Used well it is creativity; left unchecked it tends to clash with rules.

How to find the Hurting Officer
Take the phase your Day Master produces, then the stem of that phase with the opposite polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Wood produces Fire and the Yin Fire stem is Ding, so Ding is Jia's Hurting Officer. The branch Wu, whose main qi is Ding, also counts as a Hurting Officer.
| Day Master | Hurting Officer (stem) | Hurting Officer (branch, main qi) |
|---|---|---|

What the Hurting Officer means traditionally
Like the Eating God, the Hurting Officer is energy the Day Master gives out, but sharper: quick thinking, strong expression, a dislike of doing things by the book, and a constant urge to change things. When it works well, the person is traditionally described as clever, gifted in art or technology, and at their best where innovation is needed.
Because it attacks the Direct Officer, it also stands for challenging authority and rules. Strong and unrestrained, it can come out as a sharp tongue, arrogance or friction with superiors and institutions; with a Seal to guide it, the same talent is channelled productively.
The Hurting Officer in each pillar
- Year pillar
- often read as early signs of intelligence, or disagreements with elders and family rules.
- Month pillar
- a Hurting Officer as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem forms the Hurting Officer structure (伤官格), suited to technology, art, consulting or starting one's own business.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. A Hurting Officer here is traditionally read as high expectations of a partner and very direct communication; in a woman's chart, how she communicates with her partner deserves attention.
- Hour pillar
- later life and children; often read as clever, independent-minded children or creative drive that lasts into later life.
Classic combinations
- Hurting Officer meets Officer (伤官见官)
- the Hurting Officer attacks the Direct Officer, a picture of challenging rules and clashing with authority. Old texts call it a source of endless trouble; modern readings focus on whether a Seal resolves it.
- Hurting Officer with Seal (伤官配印)
- the Direct Seal restrains the Hurting Officer, so talent is guided by learning and discipline, traditionally a pattern where talent finds its proper use.
- Hurting Officer produces Wealth (伤官生财)
- the Hurting Officer feeds the Wealth stars, turning ideas into income, common in charts of professionals, designers and founders.
Common misconceptions
- The Hurting Officer is not a “bad star”. It is a source of talent and creativity; what matters is whether it has an outlet and some restraint.
- A Hurting Officer in a woman's chart does not doom her marriage; look at whether the Direct Officer is actually harmed and whether a Seal resolves it.
- Many Hurting Officers say nothing about character; they describe a way of expressing oneself and relating to rules.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
