Direct Seal (正印) in BaZi
The star of learning and protection
Short answer
The Direct Seal (Zheng Yin, 正印), also called the Direct Resource or 印绶, is the Heavenly Stem that produces your Day Master with the opposite yin-yang polarity. Traditionally it stands for learning, credentials, protection, tolerance and reputation, and among family roles it is the mother star. Its support is the gentlest and most unconditional of all, especially valuable for a weak Day Master, though too much of it can make a person dependent or passive.

How to find the Direct Seal
Take the phase that produces your Day Master, then the stem of that phase with the opposite polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Water produces Wood and the Yin Water stem is Gui, so Gui is Jia's Direct Seal. The branch Zi, whose main qi is Gui, also counts as a Direct Seal.

What the Direct Seal means traditionally
The Direct Seal stands for nourishment and protection: a mother's care, a teacher's guidance, an institution's backing, and degrees, certificates and seniority. When it works well, the person is traditionally described as generous, learned and mindful of their reputation, steady in what they do and likely to be helped by elders and benefactors.
With too many Seals the Day Master is “spoiled”: dependence, passivity, thinking a lot and doing little. If the Day Master is already strong and Seals are plentiful, they also smother the Output stars, so talent struggles to come out. The Direct Seal is best in moderation, and most needed by a weak Day Master.
The Direct Seal in each pillar
- Year pillar
- often read as a scholarly family, or early care and encouragement from elders.
- Month pillar
- a Direct Seal as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem forms the Direct Seal structure (正印格, also 印绶格), suited to education, academia, culture and public service.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. A Direct Seal here is traditionally read as a caring, attentive partner; in a man's chart it is also often read as a close bond with his mother.
- Hour pillar
- later life and children; often read as a settled later life and devoted children.
Classic combinations
- Officer and Seal support each other (官印相生)
- the Direct Officer feeds the Direct Seal, which feeds the Day Master. Duty and learning reinforce each other; traditionally good for exams, promotion and reputation.
- Killings and Seal support each other (杀印相生)
- Seven Killings feeds the Direct Seal, turning pressure into growth and authority, the most common way to resolve Seven Killings.
- Hurting Officer with Seal (伤官配印)
- the Direct Seal restrains the Hurting Officer, guiding talent with learning and discipline, traditionally a pattern where talent finds its proper use.
- Greed for Wealth spoils the Seal (贪财坏印)
- Wealth attacks the Direct Seal, traditionally read as trading study, reputation or relationships with elders for gain.
Common misconceptions
- Many Direct Seals do not mean a higher degree. They describe a way of learning and a need for support; actual education depends on luck pillars and life.
- More is not always better. With a strong Day Master, too many Seals make a person passive and held back.
- A weak Direct Seal does not mean a distant mother; family roles are a traditional analogy, not a map of your real family.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my chart has a Direct Seal?
Enter your birth details in the free calculator. The Ten God row labels every stem, and Direct Seals hidden in the branches are listed too. You can also use the table above with your Day Master.
What is the difference between Direct Seal and Indirect Seal?
Both produce your Day Master. The Direct Seal has the opposite polarity and stands for gentle protection, formal education and a mother's care. The Indirect Seal shares its polarity and stands for intuition, inspiration and unconventional learning, and it attacks the Eating God.
What does a Direct Seal luck pillar or year mean?
Traditionally a good time to study, earn qualifications or train further, and to find help from elders and benefactors. It helps most when the Day Master is weak; when it is strong, watch out for complacency.
