Direct Wealth (正财) in BaZi
The star of steady income and practicality
Short answer
Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai, 正财) is the Heavenly Stem your Day Master controls, with the opposite yin-yang polarity. Traditionally it stands for steady income, practicality, thrift, responsibility and building up assets step by step; in a man's chart it is also the wife star. Whether the chart can hold on to it again depends on the Day Master's strength.

How to find the Direct Wealth
Take the phase your Day Master controls, then the stem of that phase with the opposite polarity. For a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master, Wood controls Earth and the Yin Earth stem is Ji, so Ji is Jia's Direct Wealth. The branches Chou and Wei, whose main qi is Ji, also count as Direct Wealth.
| Day Master | Direct Wealth (stem) | Direct Wealth (branch, main qi) |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia · Yang Wood | 己 Ji · Yin Earth | 丑 Chou, 未 Wei |

What Direct Wealth means traditionally
Direct Wealth is predictable wealth earned through effort: salary, a steady business, savings and assets. When it works well, the person is traditionally described as down-to-earth, thrifty and trustworthy, a planner who values family and long-term security.
Direct Wealth also needs a Day Master strong enough to hold it. A weak Day Master with lots of Direct Wealth is “Wealth heavy, self weak”: worn out by making a living or weighed down by responsibilities. A strong Day Master with clear Direct Wealth is the picture of steady prosperity and a harmonious home.
Direct Wealth in each pillar
- Year pillar
- often read as a solid family background, or learning thrift and money management early.
- Month pillar
- Direct Wealth as the month's main qi that also shows in a stem forms the Direct Wealth structure (正财格), suited to finance, management and other steady, cumulative work.
- Day branch
- the spouse palace. In a man's chart, Direct Wealth here is traditionally read as a practical, capable wife who runs the household well.
- Hour pillar
- later life and children; often read as steady savings and a settled later life.
Classic combinations
- Wealth feeds the Officer (财官相生)
- Direct Wealth produces the Direct Officer, so practical gains back up status and credibility, a pattern held in high regard.
- Rob Wealth takes Wealth (劫财夺财)
- Rob Wealth attacks Direct Wealth, traditionally read as money being split, and in a man's chart linked to marriage strain.
- Wealth heavy, self weak (财多身弱)
- lots of Wealth with a weak Day Master, “a poor person in a rich house”, wealth in sight but hard to keep, needing Companions or a Seal for support.
- Greed for Wealth spoils the Seal (贪财坏印)
- Direct Wealth attacks the Direct Seal, traditionally read as trading study, reputation or relationships with elders for gain; it is a question of priorities.
Common misconceptions
- Direct Wealth does not mean being rich. It describes how you earn and how you relate to money.
- Direct Wealth is not dull or merely conservative; practicality and steadiness are strengths in themselves.
- Weak Direct Wealth in a man's chart does not mean a poor marriage; look at Indirect Wealth, the day branch and the luck pillars too.
- No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my chart has Direct Wealth?
Enter your birth details in the free calculator. The Ten God row labels every stem, and Direct Wealth hidden in the branches is listed too. You can also use the table above with your Day Master.
What is the difference between Direct Wealth and Indirect Wealth?
Both are controlled by your Day Master. Direct Wealth has the opposite polarity and stands for steady, earned income and long-term saving. Indirect Wealth shares its polarity and stands for opportunities, deals and more fluid money.
What does a Direct Wealth luck pillar or year mean?
Traditionally income, savings, property and marriage (especially in a man's chart) come to the fore. A strong Day Master tends to build steadily; a weak one should avoid overwork.
