Parallel Shoulder (比肩) in BaZi

The star of self and peers

Short answer

The Parallel Shoulder (Bi Jian, 比肩) is the Heavenly Stem with the same phase and the same polarity as your Day Master: in effect, another you. Traditionally it stands for self-reliance, persistence and your siblings, friends and peers. For a weak Day Master it is support; for a very strong one it tends to show up as stubbornness and competition.

How to find the Parallel Shoulder

The Parallel Shoulder is the easiest Ten God to spot: any stem identical to your Day Master. For a Jia Day Master, every other Jia in the chart is a Parallel Shoulder, and so is the branch Yin, whose main qi is Jia.

What the Parallel Shoulder means traditionally

The Parallel Shoulder is “someone like me”: your sense of self, your own opinions, and relationships of equals with siblings, friends and colleagues. When it is well placed, the person is traditionally described as independent, opinionated in a good way, and persistent, not quick to rely on others.

Its effect depends on the Day Master's strength. For a weak Day Master it lends support, like having reliable partners around. For a Day Master that is already strong, more Parallel Shoulders tend to mean stubbornness, a competitive streak and competing with peers for the same resources.

The Parallel Shoulder in each pillar

Year pillar
family and early environment; often read as many siblings, or growing up used to sharing and competing with peers.
Month pillar
when the month's main qi is a Parallel Shoulder (except for Wu and Ji Day Masters), the Day Master sits at its Officialdom (临官) stage, the classic Establishing Prosperity structure (建禄格): self-made, building things on one's own.
Day branch
the spouse palace. A Parallel Shoulder here is often read as a partnership that feels like friendship, with both people valuing independence.
Hour pillar
later life and children; often read as many friends later in life and independent children.

Classic combinations

Companions support the self (比肩帮身)
with a weak Day Master facing heavy Wealth or Officers, the Parallel Shoulder shares the load, traditionally read as help from friends and siblings.
Companions rob Wealth (比劫夺财)
too many Parallel Shoulders and Rob Wealth against weak Wealth stars, traditionally a sign that money gets split; partnerships and loans call for care.
Parallel Shoulder feeds the Eating God (比肩生食神)
the self's energy flows out as talent and work, a smooth and productive pattern.
Officers restrain the Companions (官杀制比)
with an overly strong Day Master, the Direct Officer or Seven Killings keeps the ego in check through rules and pressure.

Common misconceptions

  • Many Parallel Shoulders does not mean many siblings. It describes a pattern of self and peer relationships, not family size.
  • A Parallel Shoulder is not bad by default. For a weak Day Master it is exactly the support the chart needs.
  • “Companions rob Wealth” does not guarantee losing money; it depends on whether Wealth is fed by Output stars and whether the Day Master can carry it.
  • No single Ten God decides a chart; read it together with the Day Master's strength, the structure and the useful god.
